If you’ve ever spent a few minutes reading the “Our Ethos” section of our website you will know that we have always taken great care and pride in using minimal amounts of materials that aren’t compostable. All of our cutlery, napkins, boxes, trays, coffee cups and chowder pots are from either Vegware or Bio Pac Ltd and are made of plant based and biodegradeable/compostable materials. No straws of any kind have ever been in, our given out from our van.
“Single use plastic straws have to be one of the most ridiculous, self indulgent items humans have come up with. Used for a matter of minutes then discarded to landfill where they outlive us all, they are something we can all do without. We are right behind The Final Straw Cornwall ” The Shellfish Pig, January 2018
You can quote us on that!!
Our biggest issue with plastics has been with bottled water. At festivals and some public events it has felt essential to be able to sell people water with their meals, if they choose to buy it. But it has never sat right with us. You can buy 24 plastic bottles of water from a well known cash and carry for less than £3. The bottles end up in bins and landfill and the fact that this is happening all over the UK is too big a problem to ignore.
We recently got involved with, and ignited quite a debate live on BBC Radio 6 Music on the Cerys Matthews show via Twitter. We asked the question, how can we sell water to the public without plastic being involved? After Cerys read out lots of interesting responses to our question we were direct messaged by the people behind this product. Pretty Cool idea, huh?
We will be following it’s development carefully but we have actually decided to go a step further now. We have become a free refill station. We don’t have the space in our van to carry vast amounts of drinking water but we will do our best at public events to have a dispenser full of filtered tap water for people to help themselves too, with their own refillable cup of course!
It has been great to see lots of brilliant Cornish businesses and towns getting behind The Final Straw and Plastic Free Campaigns, so we just wanted to show our solidarity and support to everyone involved and encourage any person or business owner to get on board!
